Susanna "Anna" Dunning Leibel

August 2, 1880 — October 11, 1966

Susanna "Anna" (Dunning) Leibel was born on August 2nd, 1880, on a farm near Bruceville, IN. She was the fifth of eight children and was the daughter of William J. Dunning and Joanna (Smith) Dunning. The family moved to Bicknell, IN, when she was about six years old. When she was sixteen, she began "keeping company" with her future husband, Henry Meriedieth Leibel. They were married on May 28th, 1903, when he received a promotion from the I&V railroad which meant that he had to move to the north end of the line - Indianapolis. The couple rented houses on the near eastside of Indianapolis before finally buying a house at 251 Parkview Ave. in 1919. Their firstborn and only son, Hildreth Vivien Leibel, was born at 315 N. Hamilton and lived only two months. Marcella May (Leibel) Hubbard was born May 1, 1909 at 222 N. Hamilton, and Margaretta Elizabeth (Leibel) Hill was born on February 15th, 1912 at 922 N. Hamilton. They moved to 2210 E. New York St. before buying their first and only home on Parkview. On September 14th, 1904, Joanna Smith Dunning died leaving her youngest child (Mary Moore Dunning), an orphan - Mary's father, William J. Dunning, died a month before she was born. Meriedieth and Anna Leibel brought thirteen year-old Mary to Indianapolis and she lived with their family until she married Blanchard Edwards on September 11th, 1915. Anna lived in Indianapolis almost sixty-five years. She and Meriedieth celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on May 28th, 1953. Meriedieth died on September 12th, 1953, on their youngest granddaughter's third birthday. Anna was an active member of East Park Methodist Church, the Auxiliary of Golden Rule Lodge, the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, and the Retired Railroad Wives and Widows Friendship Club. At age 86, she died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Tuesday, October 11th, 1966 with her family present. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Maurice R. Kerr and were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 14th at the Harry W. Moore Peace Chapel. Anna was buried at Washington Park East Cemetery next to her husband. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, her parents, four brothers and two sisters. She was survived by her two daughters (Marcella May Leibel Hubbard and Margaretta Elizabeth Leibel Hill), two sons-in-law (Forrest Jasper Hubbard and Frank Eugene Hill), two grandsons (Guilford Jack Hubbard and Donald Eugene Hubbard), two granddaughters (Dolores May Hubbard Fitzpatrick and Linda Suzanne Hill), four great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters, and her sister, Mary Moore Dunning Edwards.
