Norman was an only child, born in Salem, Arkansas. When he was a young boy his family moved to Indianapolis. He attended IPS Schools #10 and # 38. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1957. He married Phyllis A. Fisher on May 21, 1960. His friend and Phyllis's brother-in-law, Don Meyers, introduced them. Shortly after their marriage Norman got a job with Caterpillar in Indianapolis. Where he worked for 35 years until his retirement. Norman and Phyllis had two sons, Kurt and Kyle Smith. Norman was the grandfather of six grandchildren, Kayla, Austin and Kourtney Smith and Clay and Chloe Smith and Wyatt Roberts. Later in his life Norman's illness kept his from enjoying many things, but his wife was able to help him attend many of his grandchildren's special events, programs and sporting activities. His two special joys were his faithful canine companions Sally and Lady. Before Sally's demise she never left Norman's bedside, a true protector of her master. When Lady was brought into Norman's home she was his new special and loyal companion. Norman had a brief stay in the nursing home and Lady missed him terribly, she mourned his absence and was not herself until he returned home. Norman's presence will be missed by his family as well as his loyal canine, "Lady".
