Magdalene Ann Vittorio was born April 16, 1921 to Mary Minardo and Michel Vittorio in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was raised in the Catholic faith in a neighborhood primarily of Italian descent and attended Holy Rosary church. She graduated from Manuel High School in 1938. Mag had two sisters, Anita Black and Patricia Vittorio and one brother, Michael Vittorio.At the age of 16 she met her future husband, George Zavela at a picnic in Garfield Park. They courted for several years and finally married on June 14, 1941. They were married at Sacred Heart of Jesus church and had their reception at the bride's mother's home on Sanders Street.Mag and George bought a house on Young Street to begin raising their family, but WW2 disrupted their plan. Mag went to live with her in-laws Elizabeth and Nick, while her husband was sent to war in England. At the time of his departure, Mag was pregnant with their first child, George Daniel. It would be two + years before George Sr. would see hi son.After the war, Mag and George had two more children, David Allen and Nancy Elizabeth. Their house on Young Street was becoming too small, so they built a new house on Shelby Street where they raised their family with the addition of two more sons, Stephen Michael and John Joseph. Mag and George lived on Shelby Street for 46 years, until George's death on July 10, 1998. They were married 57 Years. They were one of the founding families of St. Mark's church.Mag mainly stayed at home to raise their five children. She worked at Wm. H. Block Co. in the evenings part-time. After the children were raised, she began working for the Internal Revenue Service in taxpayer's service division. She worked for IRS for 15 years. She was part of the Vista Program, which consisted of visiting the elderly to help with their tax returns.Mag was the proud mother of five children, four sons and one daughter. She had nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mag loved to read and do needlework until her sight failed her. Mag was a very religious person with a very strong faith. She quietly passed away on August 29, 2002 at the age of 81. Let her be remembered by the following;2 Timothy 4:7I have competed well;I have finished the race;I have kept the faith.
