Dorothy Louella Spurgeon

March 27, 1922 — June 18, 2003

Dorothy Louella Lee Spurgeon was a wonderful, loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and caregiver to anyone or anything in need of care. She was a very giving person, asking nothing in return. She was born March 27, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Verlina Ann Ellis Lee and Avery Leonard Lee. She had three older siblings born to her father. Robert Lee Grothe, Ray Lee Grothe and Alda Lee Grothe who lived in Chicago, Illinois and were adopted by their stepfather, hence different last names. Two younger brothers were born to Verlina and Avery Lee, Howard Leverne Lee and Richard Earl Lee. Dorothy's mother passed away on March 25, 1928 and was buried on Dorothy's sixth birthday, leaving a huge void and enormous responsibilities for Dorothy in caring for her younger brothers. She and her brothers were separated and sent to live with different relatives from time to time. Her father later re-married so Dorothy was brought back home and charged with the care of her two younger brothers and eight additional siblings from this marriage, Thomas Lee, Danny Wayne Lee, Larry Lee, William Lee, Doris Evelyn Lee, Leona Sue Lee, Sharon Ruth Lee and step-brother Eugene Hayworth. In early 1941 Dorothy moved to Chicago to live with her half brother and sister-in-law, Ray (Lee) and Clara Grothe but returned to Indianapolis, after a some what short and long distance courtship, to marry the love of her life, William Osborn Spurgeon on December 20, 1941. On October 1, 1942 the couple was blessed with a beautiful baby boy, Ted LeRoy Spurgeon. He was the joy of their lives. On April 28, 1946 the couple was again blessed with another baby boy, Gary Lynn Spurgeon. And then on March 25, 1952, two days before Dorothy's 30th birthday the family was blessed with a baby girl, Carolyn Ann Spurgeon. Her family was her life.On March 25, 1971, Ted LeRoy Spurgeon, Jr. was born to Ted and Cheri (Archer) Spurgeon, making Dorothy a grandmother. Two Additional grandsons, Scott Edward and Richard Lee were later added to her family by Gary and Linda (Bragg) Spurgeon. And lastly her daughter, Carolyn added the fourth grandson, Andrew William Dill, to her list of grandsons.Dorothy supported her husband in his love for flying and operated the consession at the Bargersville Airport in the early 1950's. She was employed by the Atlantic Pacific Tea Company in the early 1940's. She also worked for the Herff Jones Company in the early 1940's an din the 1960's worked at Eckhart Bookbinding. In addition to working outside the home she was an excellent homemaker. Dorothy truly loved her family and loved being a wife, mother and grandmother and was an expert at doing so. She loved life and any living creature, helping or rescuing any in need. She loved her gardens, both flower and vegetable and canned the very best green beans and tomatoes for her family. She was the most caring and unselfish person on earth. She is so very much missed by her family and all that knew her but know that she is out of her misery here on earth and wears her wings with great pride.Mom, we miss you so.
