Charlotte Pfeifer Anderson

June 29, 1913 — June 28, 2002

Charlotte Pfeifer Anderson was born 29 June 1913 in Columbus, Indiana. She was a top student throughout her school days and was active in the Latin Club and Honor Society. During her senior year, she was chosen to receive a full scholarship to attend Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. However, her parents felt that an advanced education was not necessary for a woman and she was not allowed to accept this honor. She met her husband, Robert Clarke Anderson, when he returned to Columbus after his graduation from Purdue. He was playing n the city tennis championships and she was a spectator at the matches. They married in May of 1934 and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where they rented a large home on the south side. While living there, their first child, Robert Lee Anderson, was born. Within a few years, they moved to the Eastside of Indianapolis where they lived until 1997. During this time two more children, Joseph Trent and Janice Kay were born and Charlotte became a pioneer in the car-pool business. Her first car was a Model A Ford and she began to haul her own and all of the neighborhood children to various activities. She was a great cook and the family was almost always together at mealtime. During World War 2 when meat was rationed, she was very creative with the use of liver, brains, kidneys, heart, sweetbreads, and rabbit and chicken, which were also available. Her German potato salad (recipe from her mother) and scrapple (recipe from her husband's mother) were favorites in the household and she continued to make them for many years when the family returned home for visits. Besides her family, Charlotte enjoyed sewing; Mother's Club and church volunteer activities. She was always extremely proud of her husband and children's accomplishments and was their #1 supporter. She was a strict but fair disciplinarian and the children never had the pleasure of 'just wait until your father get home'.After her husband's retirement from Eli Lilly, they traveled extensively throughout the world. They would winter in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida and Charlotte's favorite place soon became the lanai of condominium where she would enjoy the sun, many times napping, and watching beautiful sunsets. Her life can be summarized as giving much and asking little.
