Charles Francis Mccarthy

Charles Francis 'Fran' McCarthy, the youngest of 6 children, was born December 21, 1903 to Charles McCarthy and Ella Green McCarthy. The family lived in St. Joseph's Parish in Indianapolis. His two brothers were John and William, and his three sisters were, Louise, Marguerite (Hennessey and Mary. Fran graduated from Arsenal Technical High School 'Tech', in Indianapolis.On June 6, 1928, Fran and Loretta Derleth were married in St. Catherine's Catholic Church. They had three children, Joan, David and Robert.Though he was a very quiet man, Fran enjoyed having a good time at parties and family celebrations. One of his favorite pastimes was to read Life and Saturday Evening Post magazines thoroughly; he enjoyed listening to the radio.Fran and Loretta often took their family to Indiana State Parks for outings. Later, Loretta and Fran traveled to California to sightsee and visit friends. Fran enjoyed his four grandchildren, Carol, Marty, Sharon and Jane, who often visited him. Eight more grandchildren were born after his death.As a young man, Fran joined the En-A-Vants, a social club. The members, many who were graduates of Cathedral High School, became life-long friends.Fran worked for the Big Four Railroad until he was transferred to Detroit in 1937. He worked in Detroit for several months and then returned to Indiana to work for Public Service of Indiana. Later, he became an insurance adjustor and worked for Charles McCahill, a contractor.He was diagnosed with lung cancer in February 1959. He died in September 28, 1959. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Indianapolis.
