Birth Date: 7/3/1911
Death Date: 1/19/1997
Washington Park East Cemetery
Living Cross, Lot 68, Grave 3

My first memories of my dad were of how tall and strong he was. While his 6'3" frame towered over nearly everyone his strength of character put him in positions of leadership as a young man (president of 37 Sunday School Class where he met my mother, and Master Sergeant in the Marines) and later section manager at L.S. Ayres, and an elder in the church. To me though, he was just Dad who played Borders with me on the rug at grandma's, took me swimming at Longacre on his day off, taught me to drive, drove me and my friends to movies and games and loved his family. When we were out, dad always knew people, either from church or Ayres. He was well respected, loved his friends and loved the Lord, serving him faithfully as elder (often chairman), teacher and bass singer in the choir. Perhaps his faith was tested most when mom and he faced strokes, surgeries and physical limitations in later years. His strength of spirit and love and dedication to family and the Lord endured to the end. His last words to us were "Thank You" and we replied, "Thank You Dad, for our heritage."

Edgar was born in Greene County Indiana. The family moved to Indianapolis when he was four yrs. old. They lived on St. Paul and E. 10th St. He graduated from Tech High School in 1929.

Ed & his sisters Doris (front), Rose & Mary (back) filled their home with music. Since Ed grew up with three sisters, he knew how to live in a home of females!

Ed met Doris at Englewood Christian Church where they were members for many years. They were married June 20, 1937 at her parents home.

Ed served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific arena based in Hawaii in W.W.II. He was promoted to Master Sergeant and turned down an appointment to Officers Training School.

Edgar with his parents Asa Edgar & Eva Fields Ashcraft at Englewood church. He & mom remained in Indianapolis when all his family moved to California before the war.

Doris & Ed welcomed me, their only child on March 28, 1948 after 11 yrs. of marriage. We enjoyed many vacations like this one to the Smokies.

Ed prepared to "give away the bride" Phyllis, but gained a son on December 29, 1972 when she married Larry Girdwood.

All four generations of Ashcrafts net in May 1977 as grandpa Asa welcomed Ed (son), Phyllis (granddaughter), and David Andrew (great grandson born 8/13/1976) for a visit in Arkansas. Michael Paul, grandson of Ed arrived 6/20/1979.

Ed & Doris celebrate 50 yrs. of marriage on 6/20/1987 with many family and friends at a reception. (Michael, front left, celebrated his 8th birthday with both grandparents, parents and many aunts and uncles.)

Ed & Doris were thankful to have his three sisters, Rose, Doris & Mary who sang for their wedding. They came for the reception from Utah & Arkansas.
