Frances Lucille (Harris) Huffman
9/27/1913 - 4/30/1994
Frances was born September 27, 1913 to Ora and Ernest Harris. She had two sisters - Katherine Smith and Florence Fieweger. She had four brothers -- Earl Harris, Harold Harris, Raymond Harris and Donald Harris. They grew up in Indianapolis.
Frances married Daniel Eugene Huffman September 18, 1943. They had four children - Richard Allen Huffman, Marilyn Diane Huffman (Tompkins), Deborah Deanne Huffman (caddis) and Pamela Denise Huffman (Wallace). They were married 50 years until her death in 1994.
Frances was a loving mother who dedicated her life to her home and children. She was a wonderful cook and delighted her children with her baked goods like pies, cream puffs, home-made fudge, or great cookies. She had a tight budget but always managed to put together a wonderful Christmas for her children. At Halloween she would show her creative talents when she helped us make our costumes. She made dress patterns from newspaper and would sew outfits for all three of her girls. She was a gifted artist and loved to sit at the kitchen table and sketch. She probably could have been a very good artist if she had the opportunity to expand her talents.
During the war she worked at Real Silk in Indianapolis making parachutes. She was married for 10 years to Lester Martin but divorced with no children before marrying Daniel Huffman.
She loved to read and would read 2 to 3 books a night sometimes. She loved mysteries. Her children remember the trips downtown on the bus. We would go to the dime store and get a root beer and coney dog. Usually we would get a small toy like a gun or paper dolls. Those were special times with our mother. At Christmas we would stand outside the L.S. Ayres windows and watch the displays with wonder.
Mother always had supper on the table when Dad got home from work. We could count on bean soup every Monday. She never had the latest appliances and would hang clothes in the basement, and use a stick to push them through the ringer washer. She worked hard right along with Dad to raise her children.
Frances loved her grandchildren and did fun things for them like make pancakes in animal shapes. She whistled to the birds and fed the squirrels. Her family was her all.
Frances will always live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful and caring person and each of us who were a part of her life was blessed.
Mother
We thought of you with love today,
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday,
And the days before that too.
We think of you in silence.
We often speak your name.
Now all we have are memories,
And your picture in a frame.
Your memories are our keepsake,
With which we'll never part.
God has you in His keeping,
We have your in our hearts.
We Love You Mom
