Doris Evelyn (Byers) Hoffman was born on April 19, 1925, in Perth, Indiana. Doris was the twelfth of fourteen children in her family. Her family soon moved to Bridgeton, Indiana, where she attended school. She graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1943. After graduation, she moved to Indianapolis and worked at Eli Lilly and Company. In 1948, Doris was introduced to Hubert Andrew Hoffman by her younger sister. She and Hubert were married on October 23, 1948. She continued to work at Eli Lilly until 1951. In August 1951, she had her f irst child, Garry Alan. In December 1953, she surprised her family when she had twin daughters, Sharon Lee and Karen Lee. In July 1960, she and Hubert bought a home on the far east side of Indianapolis. In October 1960, she had her second son, Ricky Andrew. In July 1962, she had her third son, Robert L. Doris began working part time in 1964 at JC Penney at the Eastgate Mall. In 1968, she began working full-time and subsequently transferred with JC Penney when they opened a store at the Washington Square shopping mall. Doris and Hubert belonged to the Sahara Grotto, where Hubert played in the band. She was a member of the Sahara Grotto band's ladies auxiliary. She and Hubert participated in activities together with the Sahara Grotto band, as well the American Legion, Forty-and-eight, Scottish Rite, and Windjammers bands. She and Hubert regularly visited relatives and took family weekend camping and boating trips and vacations. In January 1979, she became a grandmother upon the birth of her first granddaughter, Jamie Nichole. She would enjoy four more grandchildren (two boys, Joshua Andrew and Douglas William, and two girls, Shelli Marie and Carrie Ann) within the next five years. She retired from JC Penney in 1986. She and Hubert purchased a condominium in Hallendale, Florida and sold their home in Indianapolis. She and Hubert enjoyed their retirement in Florida each winter, but returned to Indianapolis to celebrate Christmas and enjoy the summer-time with their family and friends. Doris was deeply saddened by the loss of her oldest son, Garry Alan, in February 1998. She then lost her devoted husband, Hubert, in November 2001. She sold the condominium in Florida and decided to stay in Indianapolis all year round and became more involved with her church, Old Bethel United Methodist Church, where she and Hubert had attended during most of their life together in Indianapolis. She became a member of Love and Sharing at Community Hospital East. She was an Indiana Pacers fan and an avid reader. She was very fond of the Gaithers and the many gospel singing groups that performed with them. In April 2006, Doris became a great-grandmother when her oldest granddaughter had twins, Samantha Claire and Benjamin Henry. In March 2008, she became a great-grandmother again with the birth of Abigail Jane. In April 2008, she became very sick with sepsis and passed away on April 25 at St. Vincent Hospital.
