Robert Eugene Adams

Birth Date: 02/25/1912
Death Date: 10/27/1983
Washington Park East Cemetery
Section K, Lot 198, Grave 10

Robert “Bob” Eugene Adams was born February 25, 1912 in Indianapolis, IN to Eugene and Bertha Schlaegel Adams who both preceded him in death in 1975 at the age of 90 and 92 respectively. Eugene N. Adams was born in Kentucky and Bertha Adams was born in Missouri. They are buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.

A sister, Marian Adams McHugh was born September 28, 1917. She was married to the late John Patrick McHugh. Marian and their three daughters and their families live in Texas and Georgia.

Bob married the late Helen Mae Guffey on June 19, 1937. Mae was born December 13, 1909 and passed away December 31, 1959, after suffering many years from a congenial heart defect. She is buried in Washington Park Cemetery East, Section K, Lot 198, Space 143.

They moved to the Eastside of Indianapolis where they built a house on Routiers Ave. Their son, Ronald Eugene Adams was born October 28, 1941.

On November 14, 1973, Bob’s only grandchild, Jennifer Lynn Adams, was born to Ronald and Sharon Smith Adams who were married in 1967.

On February 8, 1961 Bob was married to Jamie Mitchell, born March 5, 1918 in Alabama. Their son, Donald Terry Adams, was born November 15, 1961. They made their home on Routiers Ave. also.

On August 1, 1981, Ronald Adams was married to Diane Elaine Garrett who had two sons, Jim and Ron. Diane passed away March 1, 2004 and is buried in Washington Park Cemetery East.

Bob had a career in the grocery business beginning as a young sack boy at Kroger where he worked for twenty-two years. He left Kroger’s and later accepted a position as Inventory Control Manager with Stop and Shop supermarket.

In the 1950’s he was hired as General Manager for Storey’s Food Shops which he purchased in 1973 when Terry Storey retired. In 1978 he sold the stores and retired.

Bob was an avid sports fan. Because he delivered newspapers as a young boy, he was admitted free to the Indianapolis 500 Race, to sell newspapers there. This did not include a seat but it was of little consequence to the awe-struck young fan. For the rest of his life he followed racing, attending whenever possible.

He also followed basketball, football and baseball, amateur and professional. He participated in local league bowling.

Many vacations were spent with his family fishing in the lakes of Indiana, Florida and Canada.

Bob’s faith in God was secure. He led by example, rather than fanfare. He raised his sons in Old Bethel United Methodist Church, which the family attended many years. They served on many committees and Bob also served on the Administrative Board. He set the example for others to live by, an honest, hardworking Christian family man, always with a big smile on his face for everyone, which made many friends. As his children and our mothers, we were privileged and honored to have him as a father and husband.
