Grover B. Cook, Sr. “Cook” was born in Scottsboro, AL on June 21, 1940 to Thomas, a local well-loved blacksmith, and Bertha Cook as one of seven children. He lived on an 80-acre farm at Skyline Mountain until he moved to Indianapolis in 1958.
While he came from humble beginnings on a mountain in Alabama, his life truly began when he met Patricia Jean Holland at the B&K Rootbeer Stand on Mars Hill Street in the summer of 1958 where she was working. They went to a drive-in movie on their first date and both fell asleep! They were married on October 30, 1959 in Indianapolis. He and Patti had two children, Sherri Lynn Cook Noble in 1960 and Grover B. Cook, Jr. in 1963. They purchased their first home in 1961 on Foltz Street and lived there for 11 years, until they moved to their current residence on Susy Lane. Cook always looked out for Patti; in fact; some would say he babied her! He always warmed the car and cleaned the snow off the windows in winter; he pumped gas in her car, taught her about planting a garden – especially tomatoes! Cook and Patti were a perfect balance for one another; he was the calm and she was the storm!
He was saved in 1966 at a Baptist church on the corner of Howard and Risner Street in Indianapolis, and helped build Mars Hill Baptist Bible Church in 1967. He was a member of Life Line Baptist Church until his passing. Cook always put others before himself. He often gave away his cars to people in need, gave people money who promised to pay him back but never would, and even moved a young mother into his home who couldn’t afford her rent. He was often heard saying to his children, “Always remember who you are and who you belong to.”
He worked at Moon’s Station until he began working as a heavy equipment operator in 1966. He owed a body shop on Foltz Street for many years until he founded Cook’s towing in 1985 with his son, Grover B. Cook, Jr. He was the hardest workingman you could ever meet. He never worked only one job. He plowed gardens, ran a dump truck business, and did lawn excavating in order to provide for his family. He always told his children, “A job half done is a job twice done.”
Cook and Patti’s life’s dream was to go to Hawaii together, which they fulfilled in 2004. He had the time of his life! He also loved going to Cancun on several occasions. He said they treated him “like royalty!’ More than trips, he loved having what he called “togetherness” with his family. Anyone was welcome at any time, especially his grandchildren: Amber Noble Sapp, Dana Noble, Kaylie Cook, Morgan Cook, and Jordan Cook; and one great-grandchild, who he knew would soon arrive just after his passing: Garrett Sapp. He really loved his grandchildren; his blue eyes always lit up when one of them walked into the room.
It is difficult to sum a man’s life up into words, but Cook did with his final words of wisdom, “Stay together,” “Go to church, “ and “Praise the Lord!”
