Born on May 12, 1927, Don lived for a time on N. New Jersey St, while growing up. He attended Broad Ripple High School for two years and completed his schooling at Avon while living in Monrovia/Plainfield area. He entered the US Coast Guard toward the end of World War II and was stationed on the U.S.S. Reading, which served as an escort and sub chaser. Leaving the service he became interested in auto racing and between 1948 and 1952 raced stock cars at Kitley Avenue in Indianapolis and at Terre Haute. At Terre Haute he was involved in a straightaway accident three weeks prior to marrying his fiancee’, Beverly Blanford. He was hit by three other cars while upside down on the track and then pushed over the wall. Beverly gave him an ultimatum in the hospital when she told him he had to decide between racing or her. He chose her and they were married on September 20, 1952 at St. Joan of Arc Church in Indianapolis. They honeymooned at Daytona Beach and set up housekeeping back in Indianapolis.

On June 28, 1953, Donald II was born and they moved to 1454 N. Chester before “Donnie” came home from the hospital. In June 1955, they moved to their first house in a new subdivision called Eagledale, at 3028 Midvale Drive. Timothy Michael "Timmy" was born the following January 20th. They attended St. Michael’s parish where Don was a member for over 20 years.

Don continued to love racing, following it from the sidelines. He loved country music, corny jokes, following his sons’ athletic pursuits.

Don worked for Chevrolet, Cook Coffee Company, Colonial Bakery, Cleaners and finally Jewel Tea Company where he remained for nearly 30 years running a home shopping route. He worked long hours to provide for his family. He set the example for work ethic for his sons. They moved in 1967 to 2830 W. 33rd Street where they lived as he took Bev through a health crisis and ultimately became widowed in June of 1975.

He continued to live there until he remarried in August of 1980 when he wed Betty Landers and they lived in Lawrence through the 16 years they were married. He and Betty bought a mobile home at Lake Shafer where they spent many weekends together. Don took Betty through her terminal illness with ALS when she died in November of 1996. Eventually he moved to Benjamin Court Apartment after beginning his bout with Parkinson’s disease. While there he met the lady who would become his third wife, Azalee Reedy. They moved to a Plainfield retirement community for a while but as his health deteriorated, he and Azalee moved in with her daughter Trish and husband Mike for the next 9 months where they cared for him through the end of his life.
