Leon Christian Sackett

Birth Date: 03/09/1907
Death Date: 12/20/1980
Oaklawn Memorial Gardens
Garden of Gleaner, Lot 77D, Grave 3

Leon Christian Sackett was born on February 9, 1970 to John and Gladys Lewis. At the age of five month's, Leon's mother died of tuberculosis and diphtheria in a malignant form. She was only nineteen years old. Just before she died, she willed her baby to Mrs. Oscar Sackett, her sister-in-law. There was a court battle over the custody with the court giving the child to the Sacketts.

Leon grew up in Cloverdale, Indiana. He was president of his senior class. Later he acquired the nickname Casey. He always kept up with the Cloverdale High School sports teams. He was five years older than Vera O'Rear, but they fell in love and married at the ages of twenty and twenty-five.

During the Depression, times were tough, but their neighbors, the Haltoms, helped them have some great times anyways. Lots of vegetables were shared, as were other things to make life easier.

Vera and Casey had a son named Stanley Leon and sixteen years later, they had a daughter who they named Deborah Jane. Casey worked at the smokehouse in Cloverdale and then worked at Switzer Cummings Corporation when they moved to Indianapolis. They lived on McPherson Street when Stanley was little, then they later lived to a double in Adams Street. When Debbie was a sophomore in high school, they moved to Hartman Drive in Lawrence. Casey loved watching his four grandchildren play sports. Stanley and Mary had Toni and Leo and Debbie and Larry Muterspaugh had two boys named Gabriel and Nathaniel. While Debbie taught school, Grandma and Grandpa watched Gabriel and Nathaniel. This kept them busy and entertained. Grandpa Casey was always doing funny magic tricks for the boys. Dad also liked listening to his short wave and police radios. He liked to stay home, but mom could get him to go out to eat once in a while. His favorite food was raw oysters and oyster stew. He loved all of mom's cooking!

Leon Christian Sackett passed away on December 20, 1980 of a brain tumor from smoking, at the age of seventy-three.
