Hershel O. Groce was born March 25, 1918 in Hegira, Kentucky, Cumberland County to William and Nancy Z. Flowers Groce. He was the 8th child born in the family of 11 children. He had 8 brothers and 2 sisters. They grew up in Kentucky and were farmers. He served 2 years in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) from 1937 - 1938.Hershel married Bernice Hickey on August 10, 1940 in Kentucky. They came to Indianapolis in October of 1940. He worked at Indianapolis Reed Company as a spray painter. In November 1942, he was drafted into military service and spent 3 years in the US Army Air Force. Bernice traveled with him to various air bases throughout the US. In April 1945 Hershel was sent to Guam in the South Pacific. April 22, 1945, Larry Wayne was born in Grand Island, Nebraska after Hershel had gone to Guam. When Larry was 3 weeks old, Bernice came home to Indianapolis with him on the train.In November 1945, Hershel was discharged from the service and returned to Indianapolis. He went to work at International Harvestor Company as a machine operator in 1946. Linda Kay was born October 15, 1947 and Carol Ann on December 10, 1948. Hershel, Bernice, Larry and Linda moved to their new house in 1947. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and sipping coffee and chatting around the kitchen table. He loved going to Kentucky to visit his brothers and sisters often.Larry never married and continued to live at home with his parents. Linda and Carol Ann married and left home.Hershel retired in 1976 after 30 years. He continued to garden and travel after retirement.His first grandson, Brian M. Lich was born on his 58th birthday on March 25, 1976. His second grandson, Matthew Fletcher was born December 28th, 1976 and his third grandson, Mark A. Lich was born June 4, 1978. He loved spending time with his grandsons.He died November 12, 1981 at home sitting in his rocking chair talking and laughing with an old friend. Another grandson, Christopher R. Lich was born July 9, 1982 after his death. Bernice and Larry continued to live together in their home after his death.
