Carl Thomas Oberlies, Jr. was born July 20, 1919. He had 2 brothers that were stillborn, and an older sister, Mary. As a teenager Tom loved to play tennis, roller skate and bike ride. He also loved to raise assorted animals and teach his dog tricks. He took odd jobs while he was in school, to help out at home during the depression. Though for years he went from one job to another, he was never unemployed for more and 3 days.
In 1949 he was hired on at Western Electric, where he worked until 1984. At that time he retired because his wife, Jeanne, was not in good health and he wanted to spend more time with her.
Tom married Jeanne Era Langsford on September 13, 1941. They had 4 daughters, Janice, Jo Ann, Jane Ellen and Joyce Lynn. Known as the 4 J's. They were married for nearly 45 years before Jeanne died on June 25, 1986.
After Jeanne's death Tom devoted his time to his family and his dogs and bowling. He always said he didn't know what he would do without his girls and his dogs.
For most of his life he was a physically strong man. He was also vulnerable after Jeanne died. Tom was emotionally dependent on his daughters and his sister Mary. One of his goals in life after Jeanne's death was to see the year 2000 come in. He got his wish, and saw almost all of that year.
We miss him greatly. |
