Jeanne Era Antisetus Langsford Oberlies was born December 12, 1918. She was the 11th of 12 children. At the age of 2 years, her mother died after giving birth to her 12th child. Her father was not able to care for the younger children (due to grief and lack of resources). She and the other young children ended up in an orphanage, run by the Catholic Nuns, in Versalles, Indiana.
She had a very hard young life, lacking in the love and affection of family life. Her father would not allow her to be adopted (something she never forgot or got over). So she remained in the care of the nuns until she turned 14 years old. After that she was allowed to spend sometime each summer with her father, and the school year with the nuns. Her father would visit, when he could and bring red skin peanuts and candy orange slices, apples and oranges at Christmas.
She married Carl Thomas Oberlies, Jr. on September 13, 1941. They had 4 daughters, Janice, Jo Ann, Jane Ellen and Joyce Lynn. Known as Tom and Jeanne's 4 J's. She made many sacrifices for her family and she learned to makeover, make-do and to do without. She was frugal with money and made a good life for family. She was a devout Catholic and gave time volunteering at the school. She frequently took odd jobs to make extra money.
Jeanne and Tom had 8 grandchildren and 4 step grandchildren. After her girls were grown she became more involved in her volunteer work. She and her sister, Sue Gehrick, were Pink Lady's at Community East Hospital. Even though her own health was not good, she would put on her pink smock and a big smile and take her cart of books and magazines to patients. She did this even the day before she died.
Her heart was full of love, but unfortunately it wasn't healthy. She left us too soon and she had so much she still wanted to do. We still miss her and hear her words in our heads when we need her.
We Love You. |
