Blufred Willis (friends and family called him Blu) was born to Bill and Gladys Willis on June 20th, 1916 on the Westside of Indianapolis. He attended school #14 at Fleming Gardens and went to Ben Davis High School. During his high school summers he was a lifeguard at Rochester Indiana where he spent his summers on his uncles farm. After high school he worked for Boston's Grocery on US 40, from there he went to work at General Motors, Allison Division. After 35 years of service he retired at the age of 58.
He met his wife Ruth while delivering groceries. He loved to travel, and he and his wife took many trips to Florida, Texas, Arizona, Montana, etc.
He loved boats and spent many weekends at the cabin at Riverwood on White River boating and swimming. He was an excellent swimmer.
He loved aviation and was caught flying his kite from the fence of his home and watching it during class. The teacher sent a letter home asking his parents to remove it since it was interfering with his schoolwork. He took flying lessons in his younger days. This of course led him to his occupation to work on jet engines for Allison's. He would fly helicopters with his friend Petercheff.
He was a prescient committeeman for the Republican Party for over twenty years. He was a 50-year Mason in the Evergreen Lodge. He was a caddy at the Highland Golf Course. He also took violin lessons at an early age.
He raised two daughters, Rita Ann Bennett and Bonnie Jean Western. He had four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Blu and Ruth were married for 64 years. |
