Born in Great Britain, little is known of the early years of William George McLaughlin. It is believed his father, William John McLaughlin (1851-1945) was from Cushendall, Ireland. William John married Ellen Spencer (1957-1927) of London in 1875. Nine children followed; five boys and four girls. William John and Ellen McLaughlin immigrated to America sometime in the 1890's living in Long Island City, NY. Later the couple bought a farm in Greenwood, Delaware. William George was the eldest child. It is believed that he survived Typhoid Fever as a child. All of the children of William John and Ellen eventually immigrated to America. On February 2, 1905, twenty-six year old William George McLaughlin ('William') arrived in NYC, via Liverpool aboard the Teutonic. William was an accountant with S. Pearson & Son, Inc., a British firm retained by the Pennsylvania Railroad to construct railroad tunnels under the East River. Soon thereafter his arrival in America William became a resident of a boarding house at 183 Lexington Avenue, NYC operated by Julia S. Weber. There he met Julia's daughter, Helen Theresa Weber. William and Helen Theresa were married September 25, 1909 in St. Stephen Catholic Church, 142 E. 29th Street. They rented an apartment at 220 E. 36th Street. The first of three boys, William George, II (Bill) was born July 25, 1910. On November 22, 1910, William became a naturalized US citizen moving and the family moving to 169 W. 73rd Street. On September 23, 1914, Edward Martin was born in Bellevue Hospital. In 1914 William was loaned (by his employer) to the British War Mission precipitating his families move to Montreal, Canada. In January 1916 the British War Mission moved to 120 Broadway, NYC. The family moved to Manhattan's Upper West Side to an apartment just off Central Park, and again to an apartment near Morningside Park.In 1917 the family moved into Our Lady Help of Christians Parish living at 36 Summit Street, East Orange, NJ. Third son Vincent James was born in Hanneman Hospital, NYC on April 17, 1919. Later that year the family moved to 30 South Grove, South Orange, NJ. In 1920 William transferred to Kingan & Co (meat processing), Indianapolis. Initially, William lived in the Dennison Hotel, corner of Pennsylvania and Ohio Streets. In 1921 he moved his family to Indianapolis' Holy Cross Parish renting the upstairs of the Prang home at Ohio and Highland Streets. In 1922 the family moved into St Philip Neri Parish renting an upstairs at 548 Eastern Avenue. On August 11, 1924 the family moved to 644 N. Oakland Avenue. In September 1925 son Bill left for St Meinrad Seminary. William loved to play the mandolin. He traveled extensively for Kingan. In October 1925 he spent a month in Atlanta, GA. He often traveled to processing plants near Vancouver, Canada. In early 1927 he returned from a business trip to Kansas City with a cold, developed pneumonia and died on March 15, 1927 at age 48. |
