Logan Thomas Simmonds was our special angel sent from God. He was born one month early on November 10, 2003 at 3:06pm. He weighed 5 pounds and 11 ounces and was 181/4 inches long. He had a beautiful head of dark, wavy hair, a button nose and long toes.Logan was diagnosed prenatally with a diaphragmatic hernia, which currently affects 1 in 2500 births. The hernia caused many of his lower organs to invade the chest cavity. This caused his lung growth to be greatly compromised. Survival rate for his birth defect have been reported between 50-70% nationally. In addition to the hernia diagnosis, he also had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck twice, which caused his heart to decelerate in the womb. He had to be monitored for a full week before he was born. This may be why he decided to come a month early! After he was born, the doctors had also detected a heart defect, which was not detected prenatally. Logan fought these challenges and many subsequent battles from the moment he was born, enduring several surgeries along the way. Logan fought for 52 days. During that time, we were able to learn about our special little boy. He liked being on his tummy. He liked for you to rub his head and arms. He liked his hands to be massaged. He liked for you to talk to him. A few times, he opened his eyes while you talked to him. He liked for you to sing to him and read stories. He also liked to be held. He did not like for you to touch his feet or nose. If it was too loud in the room, he would get upset. He was very stubborn, doing things at his own pace and on his own timeline. Even on the last day, when his little body was giving up, his determination to stay with us kept him hanging on for many hours longer than expected. This is where his fighter personality helped him to survive for almost two months. His short life will forever remain precious to his family and friends. He won the hearts of many doctors and nurses as well. Although we miss him dearly, we know God has bigger plans for him in heaven. We know he is one of God's best angels, watching over other sick babies who need his courage and determination to continue to fight. We are very proud of his remarkable strength which has become his legacy for many to carry with them forever.
