Emmanuel S. Zaphiriou, 90, Indianapolis, died April 5, 2003. Mr. Zaphiriou was a former restaurant and apartment owner in Indianapolis. He was active in civic and fraternal organizations and was a member of the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, the World War Memorial Commission and the National Advisory Council of Veterans Affairs, Ancient Landmarks Masonic Lodge 319, Murat Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite, Broad Ripple American Legion 3, where he was past president, Order of AHEPA of Indianapolis, where he held several offices past president, District Governor and Supreme Governor. He was given the Prometheus Award from the Hoosier District No. 12. He served on the White River State Park Food and Agriculture Advisory Council. While serving in the Army during World War II, he received two Bronze stars. Mr. Zaphiriou was also past president of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where he was also a member and was awarded Saint Paul Metal. Services will be Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 11:00 a.m., with calling Tuesday April 8, 2003 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Broad Ripple from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to service time at church. An AHEPA service will be conducted Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. followed by a Trisagion Service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Survivors include his wife Pauline (Gump) Zaphiriou; sons Johnny E. (Marianna) Zaphiriou of Indpls. and Michael E. Zaphiriou of Indpls.; daughters Dora Kay (Steve) Ley of Indpls. and Pandora (Arthur) Doughty of Indpls.; sister Esther Mittman of Atlanta, GA.; grandfather to Jason, Damon (Bobbie), Joanna Zaphiriou and Ryan, Brent, Shawn Doughty, Chris Ley and Adriene (David) Reed; great-grandfather to Piper. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will be in Washington Park East Cemetery. www.flanner-buchanan.com.
