Alfred McCreary, Jr. known to most as 'Bud', was born March 20, 1924, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was raised by his uncle Steve and aunt Vada in their boarding house at 900 North Illinois Street. Raised during the depression, he learned early to help out and when a little older had a paper route. Bud had a younger brother Bill and three stepsiblings, Fred, Roscoe and Dorothy. Although he never graduated from high school, he always said he learned everything he needed to know in the 'school of hard knocks'. He played a mean hand of Poker, made a perfect Manhattan, poured a beer with the right amount of head every time, and his word was his bond.Bud met his wife, Bonnie, in 1946 through mutual friends, and it was almost love at first sight. They were married in January 1947 at a small service. They had four children, exactly four years apart.Bud held many jobs, including the Flint Ink Co., Apartment security guard, newspaper route manager, and at a local dairy. His forte was in bartending. He worked and later managed Sol and Bud's 340 Bar, for about twenty-five years, also the Oak N' Bucket, several small taverns, and private functions.Bud had an excellent work ethic, which he instilled in all of his children. He believed in fair play, honesty, hardwork, and integrity. If he called you his friend, you had a friend for life. He also had a temper that you didn't want on the wrong side of but unless provoked, he usually kept it in check.Bud never achieved worldly greatness, but he always came through when needed, and often worked two and three jobs at once to provide for his family. That's priceless. Bud was a sergeant in WWI, but never extended his tour of service.Bud loved watching horse racing and went to the track as often as possible. Many of our vacations when growing-up were to Cincinnati, Ohio or Chicago, Illinois and almost always included a trip to the tracks. He also enjoyed watching basketball, baseball, and football. I remember many a friendly coke bet. John Wayne was his hero.Bud was an avid fisherman, who preferred a cane-pole to a rod and reel. He usually threw back the little ones, and the big ones always got away. He cleaned what he kept, Mom fried then and when we were little, they would bone them for us, so they usually ate cold fish, but never complained.Bud finally had to give up his apartment and move into a Nursing Home in November 1999. He refused to impose on his children, due to early Alzheimer's. On good days there were trips to Dairy Queen singing Army songs. The Old Rugged Cross and enjoyed the church singers that came on Sundays. His condition progressed and on October 17, 2002 he succumbed to pneumonia, complicated by Alzheimer's.Bud we will always remember that twinkle in your eyes, and your wonderful welcoming smile! |
