Iris Emily Green Avery was born on December 27, 1907, in a log cabin in Trimble County, Kentucky. The home has been remodeled and stands today. Iris was the oldest of 7 children born to Otis Moses and Inez Stuart Green. She was unnamed for the first 6 months of her life and her father nicknamed her 'snooks', a name which remained his pet name for the rest of his life.Iris met and married Hiram Franklin Avery August 1, 1925.Iris and her family lived in various south central counties in Indiana and her family grew to a total of six children. In addition to her son, George Otis who later became a family practice physician on the West side of Indianapolis. Iris gave birth to 5 daughters, Madelene, Elsa, Inez, Madonna and Linda Lou Avery. Before her death in April 2001, Iris had lost two of her children, Dr George Avery and Elsa Mae Thomas was a nurse, living in Florida.In addition to raising her own children, Iris also helped her widowed father with her siblings after her mother died at an early age leaving young children. Being a widow since 1952, Iris worked and retired from Inland Container Corp and Steven Department Store of the city's west side. She had lived with her youngest daughter Linda Lou and her husband Ervin since 1967, helping raise yet another family, Linda's two daughters, Sherri and LeAnn Lawrence. She was taken care of by them during the last few years of her life.Iris was a talented seamstress, quilter and did ceramics and painting. She volunteered at the Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center, were she made many friends. She did everything from cook meals to take patients to doctor appointments. She spend her life raising children and helping others. One of her talents, which entertained most, was her ability to recite the alphabet backwards. |
