| Bertha Mills was the third child of Lula and Jacob Wells Easton Jr. The family worked the telephone switchboard in Coatesville, Indiana. Jacob would run the telephone lines while Lula worked the switchboard as the children were in school. Bertha and sister Hattie took turns answering calls as they came in after school. As a young housewife and mother, she did many things to help with finances. She made quilts for sale and typed envelopes at home. Later when Russell went to college she started working at a bank in Indianapolis to help with college expenses. She retired from the bank after 23 years of service due to health problems.Bertha and Leora enjoyed many vacations traveling across the US and into Canada with sister Hattie and her husband Paul Jones. |
