My mother was a great mother and a great woman. In 1937, as a thirty-four year old widow with seven children, rather than place us in an orphanage, she struggled to keep us all together as a family. She never owned anything of value, no house, no car, and no jewelry. But when she died she left treasure far more precious, her values, her morals and warm memories of her love.
Mother worked as a housekeeper and cook at the Pleasant Run Orphanage. A home for parentless children that served its community for 134 years. She loved all the children there. Truly a modern day Mother Teresa, she cared for the poor and for the children especially us.
She lived in Noblesville, Indiana when she died. I think of her everyday and will until my last day. At the time of her death she was 82.
I wrote a tribute to her in the Indianapolis Star, Friday, June 5, 1992. |

After Mom's death, I felt guilty because I hadn't expressed publicly how great she was so I wrote a letter to the editor of the Indianapolis Star. The letter was published on June 5, 1992.

Family picture 1978 Bellwood, Illinois, family reunion. It took forty years for all of us to get together at my sister, Mary Krueger's home. We stayed for three days, playing harmonicas, organ and singing old songs.

Mom and Dad in 1935. This is the only picture I have of our parents. It was taken at Mallory Park in 1935. Mom worked at Mallory making capacitors for radios, burning her fingers everyday. Dad died February 26, 1937 in an automobile accident. Mom was thirty-four , widowed with seven children and Dad had no insurance.
