Birth Date: 03/01/1880
Death Date: 9/12/1953
Washington Park East Cemetery
Section A, Lot 129, Grave 4

Henry Meriedieth Leibel was born on a farm near Wheatland, IN, on March 1st, 1880. He was the son of George W. Leibel and Alice Amy (Byars) Leibel. Meriedieth was one of eight children, only four of whom lived to adulthood. His family moved to Bicknell, IN, when he was a small child. He met his future wife, Anna Dunning, in Bicknell.

Originally a coal miner like his father, Meriedieth began working for the I&V Railroad (Indiana-Vincennes) after the death of a close friend in a mining accident. When he received a promotion requiring that he move to the north end of the railroad line, Meriedieth and Anna were married on May 28th, 1903, and they moved to Indianapolis. They had only been married a short time when Anna's young orphaned sister came to live with them. Three children were born to Meriedieth and Anna: Hildreth Vivien Leibel who died on January 9th, 1906 when he was only two months old; Marcella May (Leibel) Hubbard (May 1st, 1909 - August 1st, 1982); and Margaretta Elizabeth (Leibel) Hill (February 15th, 1912 - April 27th, 2003).

Meriedieth resided in Indianapolis for fifty years and retired as a railroad conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1946 after 46 years of service. He was a member of East Park Methodist Church and the Brotherhood of Railway Conductors.

He died at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove on September 12th, 1953, his younger granddaughter's third birthday. At the time of his death, he was survived by his widow Anna, his two daughters (Marcella May Leibel Hubbard and Margaretta Elizabeth Leibel Hill), two sons-in-law (Forrest J. Hubbard and Frank E. Hill), two grandsons (Guilford Jack Hubbard and Donald Eugene Hubbard), two granddaughters (Dolores May Hubbard Fitzpatrick and Linda Suzanne Hill), one great-grandson (Michael Dennis Fitzpatrick), one great-granddaughter (Marsha Lynn Fitzpatrick), and two brothers (Oscar G. Leibel and Ralph L. Leibel). His was preceded in death by his parents and his sister (Anna Leibel Salem). Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Maurice R. Kerr and were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15th, 1953, in the Harry W. Moore Peace Chapel. He was buried at Washington Park East Cemetery.

Meriedieth met Susanna (Anna) Dunning in Bicknell, Indiana when they were both sixteen. They married on May 28, 1903 and moved to Indianapolis.

In the days when photographers came to the house, this picture was taken of Meriedieth holding his younger daughter Margaretta. She doesn't look too happy.

This picture was taken in about 1917 and shows Meriedieth and Anna with their two daughters, Margaretta Elizabeth and Marcella May. Their oldest child and only son, Hildreth Vivien, died when he was two months old.

This picture shows Meriedieth, his daughter Margaretta, his niece Helen Leibel, his father George Leibel and his brother Oscar Leibel (Helen's father) and was probably taken in the late 1920's.

Meriedieth and Anna moved to Indianapolis after their wedding when he received a promotion from the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a conductor with the Indianapolis-Vincennes line and retired in 1946 after over forty years of service.

In downtown Indianapolis, photographers often took pictures of people as they shopped. This picture of Meriedieth was taken on Washington Street, in front of the Kresge's "dime" store.

Meriedieth received this Certificate of Annuity upon his retirement from the Pennsylvania Railroad

Meriedieth and Anna celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on May 28, 1953 with a reception at their home and a family dinner at Buckley's Restaurant in Cumberland.

This is another picture taken at Meriedieth and Anna's golden wedding anniversary reception. It looks like Anna is trying to decide which present to open first.

This picture was taken during the summer after Meriedieth and Anna's fiftieth wedding anniversary. Meriedieth died suddenly on September 12, 1953 on his younger granddaughter's third birthday. Anna died thirteen years later on October 11, 1966.
