Marie Emery, as she much preferred to be called, was born February 11, 1911 in Madison Township in Jefferson County, Indiana and was raised on the family farm in Madison Township.
Marie was the first-born daughter of Peter Bodem and Barbara Helen Nora Yiesla. They are buried at Olive Branch Cemetery, just outside of Madison, Indiana, just a few miles from the family's farm.
Marie was the oldest of six children. Raymond William, the oldest son, was born February 3, 1913 and died January 10, 1985. He is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Walter Harold was born April 26, 1915 and now resides in Indianapolis. Roy Phillip was born September 26, 1917, and now resides in Murphy, North Carolina. Lee Morris was March 20, 1920, and now resides in Madison, Indiana. Norma Lucille, the only other daughter, was born December 9, 1922. She resides in Indianapolis.
Marie graduated top of her class at Central High School, in April 1928. Then in September 1928 she moved, by herself, to Indianapolis, She attended Indiana Business College, while she worked at various jobs, including a nanny for a local family, through whom she met and fell in love with Gola Emery. They were married on January 6, 1933. She became a full time homemaker and they had two daughters. Linda Kay, born March 2, 1937 and Gail Frances, born July 16, 1941. Both girls graduated from Howe High School in Indianapolis.
Unfortunately, Gola died too early, on November 11, 1962, never knowing his grandchildren, firstborn Karen Marie who was born four months after his death on March 14, 1963, Julie Lynn, born January 4, 1969 and the only boy, Daniel Craig, born December 17, 1970.
Marie worked after her husband's death, at Bramwood Press and after that, worked for and later retired from Central Publishing. After retiring, she spent the rest of her long life peacefully enjoying her most favorite things. Taking care of the home that she and Gola built together and her beautiful flowers that were her pride and joy. All the neighbors on Stratford Avenue loved to enjoy the dozens of varieties of flowers and plants in her yard. They all said they were the loveliest of all the neighborhood. Marie was so knowledgeable in this area, she could tell you the names of every flower and plant. Not just the ones in her yard.
She enjoyed nothing more than working in her yard, unless it was watching and listening to Lawrence Welk and Engelbert Humperdink or cooking and baking for her family. She enjoyed crocheting the many Afghans she made and writing faithfully in her journals, which she started in 1949 and continued until the day she died, never missing a day, always recording the weather.
She lived alone, taking car of herself, for the most part, for the entire rest of her ninety years. Her absolute greatest joy was to live long enough to see her four great grandchildren born, two boys Alexander Robert and Kyle Logan, and two beautiful girls, Amanda (Amy) Marie and Melanie Grace.
Marie died peacefully in her sleep, on November 2 2001. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. |
