Gola Harold Emery

Birth Date: 10/16/1906
Death Date: 11/11/1962
Memorial Park Cemetery
Section 8, Lot 251, Grave 9

Gola Harold Emery was born on October 16, 1906, In Lyons, Indiana, in Greene County, to Walter Ellworth Emery and Lydia McGinnis Emery, who are buried in New Crown Cemetery, in Indianapolis. Walter was born on September 4, 1884. Lydia was born on March 28, 1884. She had somewhat of an interesting start in life. Her birth parents, John and Lydia McGinnis, were thought to have been moving west, when while in Missouri, her mother passed away. John being left alone with his infant daughter, asking family friend, Rachel C. Welty, to take Lydia with her back to Indiana. Lydia grew up with the Welty's as her only known family. No one knows what happened to her father.

Walter and Lydia were married on September 9, 1903 in Bloomfield, Indiana. They had three sons. Gola's brothers were, Charles "Cleo" born November 17, 1907 in Greene County and died on September 30, 1953. He is buried in New Crown Cemetery. Ray was born on August 16, 1912 in Jasonville, Indiana and died in February 1971. We are not sure where he is buried.

Gola grew up mostly in Greene County, until they moved to Indianapolis sometime between 1912 and 1920. He graduated from Manual High School in 1925, finishing in three years. He went on to Purdue University in Lafayette, earning a BS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1929.

Around this time he met Marie Bodem. They wed on January 6, 1933 in Indianapolis. During the Depression, Gola worked at many jobs, including driving a cab and working at the Indianapolis gas Company. He eventually went on to work as an electrician at Allison's Gas Turbine, mostly at Plant 3 in Speedway.

Gola and Marie had two daughters, Linda Kay, born March 2, 1937 and Gail Frances, born July 16, 1941. As the girls grew up. Gola worked hard to make sure his "three" girls had everything they wanted and needed, even in wartime.

They spent many a weekend, as a family, at Marie's parents farm in Madison. Gola even brought electricity with him. Wiring the old farmhouse himself and very much impressing his mother-in-law in the process.

While hardly ever being seen without a hat and a cigar, all the pictures even taken of Gola, he almost never smiled. This gave him, to his grandchildren, who only knew him through pictures, a stern looking impression. But his heart melted for his wife and daughters, spoiling them every chance he got.

Gola saw both his daughters marry. Linda Married Robert Miller and February 24, 1956. Gail married Philip Myer on May 27, 1961.

Unfortunately, Gola died too young. He passed away on Veteran's Day, November 11, 1962.

He did not live long enough to see his first grandchild, Karen Marie, who was born four months after his death, March 14, 1963 to Linda and Bob. Gail went on to have his other grandchildren, Julie Lynn, born January 4, 1969 and Daniel Craig, the only boy, born December 17, 1970.

Later, there would be four great grandchildren, two boys, Alexander Robert Coffey and Kyle Logan Younger and two beautiful girls, Amanda "Amy" Marie Coffey and Melanie Grace Younger. How proud he would have been, with these lovely children, because family meant everything to Gola.
