Will You Remember Me, I Will Remember You

That is the title of the memoirs my mother had started writing shortly before her death. She loved history and genealogy so much I'm going to try to let her tell about herself as much as possible.

Life began for me on Saturday, August 17, 1946. I was born at our home in Mecca, Indiana, on Saturday night. They had to call the doctor away from the Rockville County Fair to deliver me. I believe I was born on the kitchen table. I was born with lots of dark, brown hair and brown eyes. I weighed in at 7lbs 12oz. My parents named me Evelyn Joyce. Supposedly Evelyn was after one of dad's old girlfriends/ Oh well, my family never called me that. I've gone through life as "Joyce".

My parents are Forrest Leonard and Helen Priscilla Hammond Beard. They were married on April 15, 1941 when my mother was only 15 and my dad 21. My older sisters are Linda Joan Stegner and Marilyn Sue Muncie. They were also born on the 17th of the month. Three girls all born on the 17th. We would have been famous if Connie Lucille Neal would have cooperated and been born on the 17th too. There were four of us girls for most of my childhood. Years later, when I was 15, Mom and Dad adopted another girl, Martha Shawnette Beard. I was the middle child. I became the tomboy, the strong, inquisitive one.

About 4th grade we moved to Indianapolis. I graduated from Shortridge High School in 1964. My freshman year I dropped my books at the bus stop, and a boy picked them up and carried them for me. His name was Kenneth Earl Cleverly. We have been together ever since. I married my high school sweetheart on September 25, 1965. He was in the Air Force at the time. We lived in Michigan and New Mexico before returning to Indiana to raise our family.

We had a daughter, Jill Suzanne in October 1967. She looks just like me and is quite a handful! In March 1970, we gave her a brother, Kenneth Brian. We lived on the eastside, and were very involved in our children's lives. I was Jill's Girl Scout leader for 6 years. We followed all their athletic efforts, especially Brian's baseball career.

I started working at IPS as a teacher's aide when my own kids started school. It led to a position at Key Benefit Administrators in its early years. As the company grew I learned the computers and eventually became the VP of Computers I later worked for RIMS out of Chicago, then HHP and finally Per-Se-Commerce as a payer analyst.

In February 1994, Brian married Sarah Lynn Emmerson, and shortly after in September, Jill married Jeffrey Harold Kennison. Jill and Jeff have given us 2 rambunctious grandsons, Tyler Jeffrey and Eric Earl. Brian and Sarah have the gentler grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth, Alexander Brian and Andrew Ryan. The grandchildren are very special to us, and we love them dearly. I think they keep us young.

I enjoy dining out and golfing with Ken. I spend a lot of time creating things on my computer: calendars, books, cards, etc. I also enjoy photography, especially if the pictures are of my grandchildren. I ride bikes, watch sports and work full-time outside the home. I've been the Vice President of a company, traveled the US, and still prefer the quite home life best.

My dad died in 1985. My mother still lives in Indianapolis. I unexpectedly passed away April 30, 2003. My family misses me more than words can say each and every day. I wanted to leave a legacy and be remembered when I was gone. My family thanks you for visiting this site and fulfilling my wishes.
