Bill Wynkoop graduated from High School on April 23, 1943 at Letts High School, Decatur County, Indiana. He was then drafted into Army in May 1944, and was one of the survivors of the S.S. Leapoldville, which was hit by a German torpedo while crossing the English Channel on their way to Cherbourg, France on Christmas Eve, 1944. Nothing was ever printed or known publicly about this disaster until 1994.He attended college at Butler University upon leaving the Army in 1946, where he obtained a BS degree. He received his Masters degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Two weeks after he began teaching in 1950, he was called back into the Army for 15 months service in Kansas and then at Camp Atterbury near Columbus, Indiana. After discharge, he then began his teaching career.Bill's career spanned 35 years, teach 14 years, counselor 5 years, and principal 16 years. He retired in 1985 as principal of School 81 in Indianapolis. His many hobbies and interests included woodworking, reading, collecting antiques, and story telling. |
