Mabel Lorene Browning McMillan

Birth Date: 6/6/1927
Death Date: 1/20/2003
Washington Park East Cemetery
Obelisk Court, Section C, Level 4, Crypt 81

Mabel Lorene Browning was born on a farm close to Stones Crossing in Johnson County, Indiana to Otto Ray Browning and Leffie Umbarger Browning. She was the youngest of seven children, attending Mt. Auburn Methodist Church as a child but spent most of her growing years in Franklin, Indiana later graduating from Franklin High School.

She had three sons; Roger, Steven and Gregory Cummings, from her first marriage. She remarried William "Bill" McMillan on august 26, 1961, who had a son; James McMillan. As a homemaker, together with Bill, they raised four boys in the Southport, Indiana area.

Prior to her marriage to Bill, she was an employee of Indiana Bell Telephone Company in Indianapolis. During her 41 years of marriage with Bill, she stayed active outside the home, volunteering for duties at Edgewood United Methodist Church Cub Scouts, Edgewood Little League and Edgewood Pony League where she managed the concessions for several years while Bill spent time with the boys, teaching them baseball. Her and Bill enjoyed following their children's various activities and were always ready to pitch in whenever they could, This evolved into them following their grandchildren's activities both at school and at play.

Mabel is survived by her husband William (Southport, Indiana), brother Robert (Tampa, Florida), sister Media Short (Madison, Indiana), her four children, 13 grandchildren (One grandchild deceased), and three great-grandchildren.

We believe Mabel McMillan touched and warmed many lives with her love. In that sense, she was a great teacher. Certainly this was true for her children, whose lives she affected greatly, and by her example to others. She was a fierce fighter for what was right; including virtue, unselfishness and sincerity. She was honest and full of down-to-earth wisdom concerning life's choices and all other important issues and subjects that confront each of us.

Balanced between pride and selflessness, she maintained respect along with a true concern for her family and friends. She loved her family passionately. She was their protector who enables them to succeed with her courage, guidance and encouragement. Mabel suffered for her family, in her own trials and surreptitiously through their pains, disappointments and failures. Though fragile and delicate, she was fiercely strong. She was a radiant light whose love gave warmth to many lives that she touches.

As we remembered her on the day of her burial, how appropriate that we should feel the bitter cold on the coldest of days (-14degrees). We will miss her very much. We will feel painful absence of her love.

"God bless her and hold her precious soul close to his heart".
