Shirley Hale says she didn't know Floyd had been in Pearl Harbor until after six years of marriage. It took sixteen years to find out about his service in Solomon Islands. He was in Pearl Harbor and saw the first Japanese planes attack the island.Shirley gave us a copy of a clipping from a Robinson; Illinois newspaper dated Monday, June 7, 1943.Sgt. Floyd Hale, 24, son of Mr. & Mrs. Irven Hale of Robinson, returns on furlough after three years for the first time. The local flier returns to serve as an instructor and will be stationed at Salt Lake City; his furlough is for fifteen days. He has four battle stars. The stars are for Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, Midway and the Solomon Islands. The Indiana Geology Club mourns the loss of long-time member Floyd Hale. The following is from the Indianapolis Star of November 27, 2002. Floyd R. Hale, 83, Indianapolis, died November 25. He was a draftsman for the Naval Avionics Center, retiring in 1978. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and a survivor of Peal Harbor. He was a member of Naval Avionics Geology Club. Memorial contributions: Prayer Tower at Calvary Temple, of which he was a member.Good-bye to a dear friend. More than 150 mourners paid their respects t the calling and services for Floyd Hale. He and Shirley were happily married for 22 years. He was a much love family man, loyal member of his church, a valued co-worker, a good neighbor, a good citizen and a friend to many. Brother McIntosh conducted a wonderful service. Floyd's son, John sang several of Floyd's favorite songs. Dozens of beautiful floral arrangements adorned the room. He was given a military funeral, which Naval Avionics retiree Sybil Burnett, herself a World War II veteran, helped to arrange. The casket was draped in the American flag and escorted by Color Guard to the internment site, there was a three-gun salute, taps was played, and the folded flag was presented to the widow. Floyd was a kind and gentle man and he will be keenly missed. The club extends hear-felt sympathy to his family.
