Garden of Devotion

On October 5th, 1958, we were given the first of three gifts to love and care for. To the best of our ability, we did for 19 years, 8 months and 2 days. Then James Alan had to return from where he came. He was a very small baby, weighing only 4 lbs 5 oz. being new and inexperienced, we were afraid to handle him. His aunt had to bathe him the first couple of times. He was like a baby bird with no feathers. In November, he broke out in a rash. Reading our baby book, we were sure he had chickenpox. Crying I called his father home from work and rushed to the doctor's office only to find out he had heat rash from being over dressed in a hot apartment. His father gave him a nickname that his mother wasn't too fond of, (Tootie). That was all he was called for years. Growing up there was no problems, other than the usual cutting teeth, measles, etc. When he was 4 years old he gained a brother, also very small at 5lbs 6 oz., needing a lot of care. Mother was a bit wiser by this time. At age 9, again he gained another brother. (Wars of the lot)Time passed too fast. James Alan broke his leg skating and fell in love with his first car.All at once he was eighteen and joined the Navy.In six weeks of Navy Boot Camp, he went from a boy to a man, which his parents had only begun to know.
