Section 35, Lot 286, Grave 1

George Zavela was born September 9, 1919 to Elizabeth Samu Zavela and Constantine Zavela, at their home on Bright St. Indianapolis, Indiana on the city's near Westside. This area consisted of primarily Romanian descent. George was raised in the Romanian orthodox faith, attending Sts Constantine and Elena Romanian Church. George had one younger brother, Daniel.
By the time, the boys were school age; the family moved to 445 E. Troy Ave. on the cities Southside. George attended Southport High School, where he was an outstanding football player. While in high school, he met his future wife, Magdalene Ann Vittorio. Magdalene lived on Sanders Street and George would ride his bike to her house to visit.

After Graduation from Southport High School, George attended Indiana Business College. The following year he enrolled at Butler University, playing football for Tony Hinkle. He belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. George and Mag were married on June 14, 1941 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church after George's conversion to the Catholic faith.

After graduation from Butler in 1942, George and Mag purchased a house on Young Street. They lived there until George enlisted in the Army Air Corp. Mag was several months pregnant, so she went to live with her in-laws Constantine "Nick" and Elizabeth until George returned home from the service. George was sent to England where he was trained in radar repair on B52 bombers. George reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged September 16, 1945.

After the war, George returned home and finally met his son George Daniel. They moved back to their house on Young Street. Several years later, they were blessed with two more children, David Allen and Nancy Elizabeth. George began working for the Internal Revenue Service as a Revenue Officer.

In 1952, George and Mag moved to their newly built home on Shelby Street on the city's far Southside. They were one of the founding families of St. Mark's Catholic Church. George and Mag had two more children, Stephen Michael and John Joseph.

George put his football skills to work coaching CYO football for 12 years and assisting with CYO basketball. George was awarded the John Bosco award in 1967 for outstanding service to youth.

George retired from the IRS in 1980 so he could devote more time to perfecting his golf game and honing his spectator sport skills. He was a devoted grandfather and enjoyed attending any event in which his grandchildren participated.

George was blessed with a strong will and profound faith. He survived 16 years following kidney cancer. He quietly passed away July 10, 1998 while his wife held his hand.
