Dorothy Mae Evans

Birth Date: 4/5/1919
Death Date: 9/16/2002
Washington Park North Cemetery
Garden of Eternal Liberty, Lot 102 C, Grave 4

Dorothy Mae Osborne was born on April 5, 1919 in a small farmhouse near Windfall, Indiana in Tipton County. She and her brother, Robert lived there with their parents, Emma Moorman and Ross Osborne, until her parents divorce when she was twelve years old. She, with her brother and father, moved to the Osborne family house down the road.

After graduating from Windfall High School in 1937, she attended and graduated from Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis. The highlight of her nursing career was during WW2 when she enlisted in the United States Army and served as a nurse in Europe.

When she returned home, she rekindled a romance with Jack Evans of Marion, Indiana. They were married in 1946. By 1953, they had three children and made their home in Indianapolis. Determined to always "be there" for her children, Dorothy spent the next two decades as a homemaker and mother. She always felt that volunteer work was important and visited patients at Central State Hospital on a weekly basis for years while her children were in school. She resumed her nursing career when her youngest child was in college and worked at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis until her retirement in 1982. She was a devoted daughter, daughter-in-law, and stepdaughter to her mothers and fathers in the there later years.

After putting their three children through college, Dorothy and Jack traveled and vacationed extensively with family and friends. They also enjoyed entertaining in their home.

During the nineties, along with their children and three grandchildren, Dorothy and Jack hosted more vacations. In late July 2002, they traveled together to a resort in Cancun, Mexico. Dorothy referred to this wonderful trip as her "last hurrah".

On August 11, 2002, Dorothy suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. She was never able to return home, although her family was hopeful that she would recover. She died peacefully at a nursing center on September 16, 2002. Her family was grateful that they were able to express their love openly with her during the last month of her life, and though she will be missed, they are grateful that her life ended with dignity and happiness.

Dorothy touched many lives in her eighty-three years of life and this was quite evident from the overwhelming turnout for her calling and funeral on September 20th and 21st. The outpouring of support and kind words from friends and family were deeply appreciated by her immediate family.

Dorothy was a special woman who will live on in the memories of all who were blessed to know her. She will be remembered for her straightforward approach (like it or not), her sense of humor, her generosity, her intelligence, her politics, her family devotion, her ironing, her puzzle books, her martinis, her telephone etiquette (or lack there of), her coupon and catalog shopping, her -shirts, and even her Campbell soup recipes. She was a great wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend, but above all, as Dorothy Evans, she was a 'real class act".
