Helen Theckla Roetter Boles was born on March 14, 1916 the daughter of Bessie H. Rice Roetter and Oscar Paul Roetter in Marion County Indiana, Washington Township at home. The house she was born in was located on what is now the South East corner of 52nd Street and Evanston Avenue. At the time, it was way out in the country. She attended Washington Township School # 6 located at 46th Street and Keystone. She started the 7th grade, at John Strange but when her home was taken into the city she was transferred to School # 70 where she graduated in 1930. She went to Broad Ripple High School and graduated in 1934. After graduating, she went to work at the Indianapolis Glove Factory.
She had her first date with Morris Boles on Christmas day 1931. They went to a movie downtown. She married Morris on April 17, 1936. The ceremony took place in her home. E. Earl Jones, minister of Bellaire Methodist Church, married them. They went to Chicago, Illinois on their honeymoon and stayed at the Stevens Hotel, at that time the largest hotel in the world. The total cost including Railroad fare, one night hotel, and food was under $150.00. On her 50th Anniversary, they returned to Chicago and stayed in the same hotel, the room alone cost more the $150.00.
She had two children, Marilyn Faye born on January 25, 1939 and Lawrence Paul born on July 12, 1941. She and Morris traveled to many areas in the USA and overseas visiting England, Turley, the Holy Land and Australia.
She was a sales clerk for the Wm. H. Block Co at the Glendale Store. She started to work on the first day that Glendale Mall opened in 1959.
She was a faithful member of the Bellaire United Methodist Church. She was a 50-year member of Millersville O.E.S. # 300. She died on October 18, 1999. She was married 63 plus years. |
