Carol June Deschler

Birth Date: 4/9/1928
Death Date: 2/17/1995
Washington Park East Cemetery
Section J, Lot 723, Grave 6

Carol was born on 9 Apr 1928, the 4th and last child of William Frederick Deschler and Margaret Ward Deschler. At the time her parents lived at 1942 N. LaSalle, Indianapolis. Her parents had come to Indianapolis from Covington KY in Sep 1925. Her father, William 'Bill' Deschler, was a 'Master' platinumsmith, who made custom jewelry. The Great Depression was hard on Carol and her family. They lost their house, their bank closed and Bill Deschler was out of work for two years. In 1939, when Carol was only 12, her older sister, Kathryn, married J. Ralph Forcum. Kathryn and Ralph would, more often than not, include Carol in plans for trips and outings. She graduated from Tech (Arsenal Technical High School) in1946. In the late forties Carol would go on a trip to Yosemite National Park, with Pauline Forcum, Ralph's sister.Besides being a beautiful girl, Carol was quiet and painfully shy. In 1946 she formed a relationship that would last for almost half a century - she took at part-time job with the Indiana Division of the Indiana State Library in downtown Indianapolis. Her part time job became permanent, and though not a librarian, she grew to know more about the library than most of the college educated staff. The Indiana Division served the public, the Governor of Indiana, and Indiana's General Assembly. When she retired from the Indiana State Library in the spring of 1993, she had worked there for 48 years, longer than anyone had ever worked there. For her very special services to the State, Indiana's Governor Evan Bayh named her a SAGIMORE OF THE WABASH for her service to the people of Indiana. This was a great honor indeed, usually reserved for business moguls and the highest ranking state employees. After retirement she became a volunteer for Garfield City Park. Carol was a member of Linwood Christian Church. Carol never married and lived her life with her parents. From the late sixties and until he passed away in 1973, she helped care for her ailing father. When her mother became an invalid in the late 1970's, Carol cared for her until she passed away at the age of 95 in 1990. She always vowed that her mother would never be put in a nursing home, and she wasn't.But Carol will always be remembered most for her love of family, as exhibited in her devotion to her nieces (Rosemary and Mary) and her nephews (Jim and John). She took them to movies, basketball games and any other activity they desired. At Christmas, it was always Aunt Carol's presents that the children waited for. In essence she became a second mother to these children. And when her great nephews (Daniel, David and Mark) came along she reveled in them and they idolized her, as their parents still done.Aunt Carol, we loved you then, love you now, and will always love you for all you did for us. God Bless and keep you.

Carol received the SAGAMORE OF THE WABASH award in 1993 from Gov Evan Bayh. This most distinguished award was created in 1945, and is highest honor, which the Governor of Indiana bestows. It is a personal tribute usually given to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state or to the governor. Among those who have received Sagamores have been astronauts, presidents, ambassadors, artists, musicians, politicians, and ordinary citizens who have contributed greatly to our Hoosier heritage.
