William 'Bill' was born in the house at 42 Elm St, Covington, KY on 2 Apr 1890 to Andreas Deschler and Louise Betz. Andreas has come from Germany in 1870, having been born in the village of Muhllhofen and he settled in the large enclave of German immigrants. In this ear of master craftsmanship, Bill was 14 (1906) when he went to work at Gephards in Cincinnati, OH as an apprentice jeweler. He worked his 1st 6 months for nothing, cleaning spittoons and doing other odd jobs around the shop. During his 2nd six months he was paid $1.50 per week. About 1910 the Deschler family moved to 1712 Woodburn in Covington. Before 1915 Bill took a more prestigious position with Whitehouse Brothers in Cincinnati OH.About 1911 he met a 15-year-old Margaret Ward, who was the housekeeper in the Rusk household. They courted for 3 years, and were married at Grace United Church of Christ on 25 Jan 1915. After the ceremony, the newlyweds went to William's parent's house for dinner, then they took the trolley to the 1915 Zigfield Follies at the Walnut Theater in Cincinnati. That night when they got out of the show, snow was on the ground and the moon was shining. They took the trolley to the 'incline' (a trolley going up a hill) and on to their 3rd floor apartment in Price Hill (Cincinnati) near Burnet Woods on Riddle Road. They lived there from Jan-Jun 1915 when they moved to 16th Street in Covington, KY. All of the Deschler brothers and sisters were musical. Bill played the mandolin in a German band in the period of 1910-1920. In the 1950's Bill would still be playing tunes like 'Davey Crockett' for his grandchildren.By the early 1920's Bill had become a 'Master' platinumsmith and he was recruited by many prestigious jewelry making firms. The family left Covington and came to Indianapolis in September 1925 to work for J. C. Sipe Jewelers, where he would work until 1932 when he lost his job, his house and his bank account due to the Great Depression. In 1932, during the depths of the depression William sold pies that Margaret baked, on the streets of downtown Indianapolis and he was listed in the 1933 City Directory as a 'Salesman'. In 1933 he found a job at Reis Co, as a jeweler and continued working there until 1962 when he was 72 years old and forced to retire because of ill health. During WWII, he was an Air Raid Warden for his neighborhood. From 1939 to his death he and his family lived at 1223 N. Olney, in Indianapolis. William 'Bill' Deschler was a kind, gentle, and quiet man, who deeply loved his children and adored his grandchildren. Most weekends in the 1950's and 1960's he had a least one grandchild spending the weekend. His deep faith in the Lord carried him through hard times, and he tried to pass this devotion to his children. -- God bless you, Grandpa! |
