The following tributes were read at John's funeral service:

From Brett:

I remember: You lying on the floor while I stood on your hands and danced.
Standing on your shoulders and diving into the lake.
Knowing that every Saturday morning when we woke up that there would be a Red Pop and a Cherry Pie waiting for us.
Losing my weekly 25 cents allowance to you in free throws contest.
Going to Town Club on Saturday mornings to buy our weekly supply of soda pop.
You teaching me to say please and thank you, Mr. and Mrs., to call adults by their last name and to treat everyone with respect.
You taking me fishing every Labor Day, but you didn't get mad when I became bored and threw rocks in the water.
When I was older, quiet mornings fishing with you, just you and I in the boat.
The time we caught a man looking in our window, you grabbed your gun and Mom, Shawn and I on your heals as you tried to go to the door.
Teaching me the value of a good days work- no matter the job.
You always kissing Mom hello and good-bye.
Getting paid a whole 25 cents to clean the entire Parts Department.
Going to the ballpark on Saturday mornings in the Red, 1963 Galaxy 500.
Going to Burger Chef every Friday night.
You always telling me to get the most of my education I would appreciate it later.
How children loved being around you and knowing how much Makenzie & Chase would have enjoyed you.
You making me do all that awful yard work that I now love to do.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote:

"For each thorn- there's a rosebud;
for each twilight- a dawn;
for each trial- the strength to carry on;
for each storm cloud- a rainbow;
for each shadow- the sun;
for each parting- sweet memories
when sorrow is done."

You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. I will not say goodbye, only so long for now.

From Shawn:

As I reflect and look back on my Dad's life, the things that I will always remember are his sense of humor, his honesty, his love for his family and friends and his passion for working hard.
He was the best role model we could have possibly had. One of his favorite sayings was "If you're to do something, give 100% or don't bother doing it." That was clearly his approach to everything.
One of the things that will comfort us in the future is just knowing that he did connect with, and touch so many people in a positive way. I know I will spend the rest of my life trying to live up to the grace and honor with which he lived.
It is much soon to have to say goodbye to my Dad, my role model, and my friend. I know he is in a better place and we all now have a very special Guardian Angel. I know the best compliment anyone will ever pay me is to say that I'm my father's daughter.

I love you Dad. Rooster.
