Born on April 13, 1917 in Youngstown, Ohio, Joseph James was the son of Italian immigrants, Vincenzo Di Fillipo (anglicized to James Phillip at Ellis Island) and Erminia (Bellino) Phillip. Joe was one of two children with an older sister, Lucille Marie Phillip. (An added note of interest is the fact that as an adult Joe used an "s" on the end of his folks' surname "Phillip" and went by the last name "Phillips.")

Joe married Josephine E. Molli on March 11, 1939, a fellow Ohio State student. While at Columbus, he pursued a career as a metallurgist and did research from 1942-53 at the distinguished Battelle Memorial Institute. Part of his research involved work on the Manhattan Project during W.W.II. In 1953, Joe earned a B.A. from Ohio State University.

In 1953, the couple moved with their four children (Joseph Jr., Louis, Michael and Cristina) from Columbus to Kokomo, Indiana. From 1953 to 1970, Joe worked as a technical writing editor and patent engineer for Haynes Stellite in Kokomo. In 1970, he became a patent agent for the legal division of Cabot Corporation, which had purchased Haynes Stellite. As patent agent, Mr. Phillips was responsible for patents, licenses, trademarks and agreements. While at Haynes Stellite/Cabot Corporation, he was responsible for licensing over 160 patents.

Joe was active in Kokomo in the Creative Arts Council from 1966-76. Joe was also involved in the Sagamore Council of the Boy Scouts of America and was chairman of the Explorer Council in 1974. He also served as historian and archivist for Kokomo's Haynes Museum. In 1974, he was recipient of the distinguished U.S. Office of Science Research and Development of Effective Science. Other memberships included the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society for Metals, the Kokomo Engineering Society, the Society for Technical Writers and Editors, and the Specialty Librarian Association. Mr. Phillips was also a life member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association.

Joe and his wife were patrons of the Kokomo Symphonic Society. They were great believers in having cultural events available for the community. They were especially fond of classical music and opera.

For all of Joe's contributions to the world of specialty metals that are used in NASA spacecraft, commercial jet engines, as well as other industrial applications, we are grateful. For his involvement in community affairs, we applaud him. But more than anything else, he will be remembered for his listening ears, warm hospitality and wise counsel. For these attributes, we have enriched hearts that give thanks.
