Sarah was born on Easter Sunday, in a tent on the banks of the Wabash River in Fairbanks, Indiana, April 23, 1916. She did not celebrate her birthday on Easter until 2000 when she turned 84.Early in 1917 the family, Jesse E. and Maggie M. Cole Craig along with their five children, Alvia, Harlin, Florence, Emory and Sarah moved to Hymera, Indiana and then in 1923 the family moved to Indianapolis. They lived on the south side of the city in the Fletcher Place, Fountain Square area where Sally attended grade school and then Manual High School where she graduated, the only one in her family to do so, in 1934.Sally was active in Fletcher Place Methodist Church and she along with a friend started a day care center at the church, she also played on a basketball team for the church and continued her love of basketball up to the day she passed away. She was a very staunch Pacer fan. While working at McCroy's Five and Dime, she met Marion N. Turner and they married in November of 1936. Marion and 'Sally' had three children, Beverly Ann, Bonnie Jean and Byron Lee.In 1956, Sally went to work at Western Electric and worked there until 1978 when she and Marion took their retirements and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where they resided until Marion's death in 1984.Sally moved back to Indianapolis in April of 1984 where she resided until her death in 2001.Sally and Marion had 12 grandchildren, one of which, Barbara Fowley, is laid to rest along side of Marion at Calvary Cemetery. There is also a great-grandchild, Patrick Runyon, laid to rest at the foot of Marion's gravesite. |
