Betty Elaine DeLong Smith was born August 20, 1929 in Logansport, Indiana to Jack and Hazel DeLong. Betty graduated from Logansport High School in 1948. On September 15, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart Ken Smith and moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he was stationed in the Army. After Kenny's military service, they relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana, where Betty devoted most of her time raising three children, Gary Lawrence, Laura Ann and Robert Brian.Betty love sports; she was active in tennis, basketball and golf. She was also an avid Purdue basketball fan. She was very active in her church, belonging to a women's circle at the Lawrence United Methodist Church. She was elected to serve office there and anticipated in many church functions during her many years as a church member. After a brief stint in toll painting in her earlier years, Betty enjoyed being a volunteer at the front desk of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. She also resumed the piano lessons she had given up on as a child. Betty spent many a happy hour playing her piano. She had a great love for dogs and collecting objects of art such as dolls and paperweights.Betty was a very devoted wife of over 50 years. She and Ken were very excited to have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together with their family in Florida. She also loved being a great mother and enjoyed being with her grandchildren. Family meant everything to Betty.Betty demonstrated outstanding courage during her four yearlong battles with kidney failure and dialysis. She was a strong and vibrant woman. She is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her.
