Frederick Eugene Zendt was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on November 28, 1909, to Stephen Harnish and Mary Evaletta Swift Zendt. His father was a Christian Church minister.Gene, as he was called all his life, moved with his mother and five-year old sister, Miriam Kathryn Zendt, to Bloomington, Illinois. He was two weeks old. There they would join his father and seven-year old brother, Errett Garfield Zendt, who had gone on ahead to the new pastorate. When Gene was about seven years old, the family moved to Galesburg, Illinois, where the parents would live until Father Zendt's death on March 20, 1941. His ministry saw the building of a large First Christian Church in Galesburg. All three children attended Knox College of that city. After a year in business with the American Chicle Company, Gene returned home and told his parents that he wanted to become a minister. He went to Indianapolis and enrolled in the Butler University School of Religion where he studied for three years. Toward the end of this period he met and became friends with Esther Hoover who would three years later, become his wife in 1939.Not satisfied with what he was learning at Butler, Gene moved to New Haven, Connecticut, and became a Yale Divinity School student. He received his B.D. degree in June 1938, and stayed one year more at the Divinity School. His pastorates were in Christian Churches Disciples of Christ at Fayetteville, Arkansas; Ann Arbor, Michigan; St. Louis, Missouri; Kansas City, Missouri; El Paso, Texas and Farmington, New Mexico. In 1964, the family moved to Sacramento, California, and Gene eventually became a Social Worker for Sacramento County Welfare Department. After seven years, he retired.Three children were born to Eugene and Esther Zendt, Stephen Hoover Zendt, April 28, 1943, Virginia Swift Zendt, June 12, 1945, and Mary Eugenia Zendt, August 11, 1950. The latter child died at five years, and her ashes, as well as her father's ashes, are buried at Memorial Park Cemetery side-by-side in Indianapolis.
