Virginia Dillinger Hoover was born on March 9, 1875, in Findley, Ohio, to Archibald and Fannie Kempher Dillinger. She was the fourth of five daughters, the first having died in infancy. She was a beautiful blond and blue-eyed girl who did well in school and was devoted to her parents and the Christian Church. After graduating from high school, she helped her father in his dry goods store for two years. He then sent her to college for four years at Hiram College near Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated just before her marriage to Guy Israel Hoover on July 12, 1900, in her parents' home. A wedding breakfast followed. She was a much beloved minister's wife as well as the mother of five children. She encouraged each of her children to be a good student. For two years, she was president of the Parent Teacher's Association at the elementary school in Irvington, a suburb of Indianapolis. The two older children graduated from that school and three younger children attended all eight grades there. When Esther was close to two years old, the family bought a comfortable home at 5324 Julian Avenue close to the Downey Christian Church where Esther was later married to Frederick Eugene Zendt in 1939. Like her mother, she married a minister.Unfortunately, Virginia Hoover died at the age of fifty-eight because of a ruptured appendix. Following surgery at Methodist Hospital, she lived for five weeks but died in the hospital on September 15, 1933. Adored by her husband and children, she was greatly missed. She had four grandchildren when she died in addition to her three married and two unmarried children. Her funeral service at the Downey Avenue Christian Church on September 18 was widely attended. |
