Birth Date: 2/2/1906
Death Date: 7/4/1999
Memorial Park Cemetery
Section 11, Lot 160, Grave 3

Nellie was born in 1906 on Groundhog Day. Her brother, John Russell Farrell, born December 1903, had died at six months old. At some point in time, her family lived on McCarty Street on the south side of Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended School Number 13 and went to Manual High School. She enjoyed reading, especially poetry, and camping.Nellie married an artist and photographer, Earl Robertson. Earl worked at L.S. Ayres Camera Department. Nellie and Earl had one child, Doris Joan. Times were hard and they moved in with Nellie's mother and father on Dearborn Street. This probably caused tension and they divorced in the late 1930's.Nellie was courageous and adventurous. Like many others, she survived the Great Depression and knew first hand what it is like to do without, sometimes helping others, sometimes leaning on others. After the divorce, she went to work for Rodefield Company, a Zenith Distributor. She worked her way up to Office Manager. In the 1950's, she traveled alone to New York and Nassau. She loved children and they loved to be around her. She supported her mother until her mother died in 1970. Nellie retired with 35 years of service. At sixty-seven years old, she began a new life as Mrs. Harold Chamberlain and moved to El Segundo, California. Hal had been El Segundo Fire Department Captain, Indianapolis Indian and a baseball coach. Nellie and Hal were great traveling companions and enjoyed many trips by land, air and sea. Their favorite pastime was taking daily strolls along the Pacific Ocean. Nellie had a wonderful sense of humor and often laughed at herself. She was vivacious. At seventy-five years old, her daughter talked her into riding the merry-go-round at Olde Towne Mall in El Segundo. When the ride ended, Nellie stayed on her horse. Everyone thought she wanted to ride again. Actually, she could not get off, so an attendant helped her off. Everyone had a good laugh. After eighteen years of marriage, Hal died, and Nellie moved back to Indianapolis to be near her family. Once again, she started over, leaving the life and friends she had so dearly loved for the past two decades. She joined the Keystone Optimist Club and met many wonderful friends. Nellie always loved to be with her family during the holidays. She had long ago set a tradition of placing a festive chocolate at each person's plate and always brought a biscuit for the family dog. She never passed judgment on anyone as she listened to everyone's stories and problems.Nellie moved in with her daughter and son-in-law when she developed heart problems. She died in her own bed at the age of 93. As one of her great grandchildren expressed, 'Grandma loved life and always had something nice to say about everyone'.
