Doris Joan, called Jo-an, was born at home on a winter day in December. She lived with her parents and grandparents in Indianapolis, Indiana. Times were hard. Her grandfather died in 1934 and her mother divorced in the late 1930's. Her mother got a job and supported both Joan and mother, Ada Farrell. She was an obedient child; her grandmother only got mad at her once. She wanted to go to the circus and that was definitely out!Joan attended School 54. She participated in a dozen school plays, some with lead parts. She was good at acting because her photographer father directed her in short silent home movies beginning at age two. She was a good tap dancer. She was artistic and loved to read and write.Joan met Herschell Robertson at Arsenal Technical High School. They sat next to each other in roll room since their last names were the same. Joan was shy, but Herschell got her attention by tying her coattails to her chair. She finally got up the courage to ask Herschell to escort her to a party. They were a couple from then on.Joan went to work for the P.R. Mallory Company after high school. Herschell and Joan married in 1946 after war. They rented on Burdsal Parkway until the other half of her grandmother Farrell's duplex became vacant. They had two children, first Noel, then Shari. Joan loved to spray the children with the water hose on hot summer days, sit on the front porch on fair evenings, chat with neighbors over the back fence, picnic in parks and attend an occasional dance. She looked forward to taking her children trick-or-treating and dressed them in her old dance costumes. The family took long Sunday drives searching for an affordable home. Joan worked for Rodefield Company. In 1960, they purchased their first home. After the kids left the nest, they built their dream home. After 27 years at Rodefield, the company closed. Joan then worked for Indiana Mills. A brief black period in their lives began in 1982 when their son died and Herschell's job was dissolved. They had to downsize to a condominium. After retirement, Joan and Herschell traveled a bit and visited with their grandchildren. Joan loved to see new places. In 1998, Joan's mother became ill, so they bought a small home and all three moved in together. She cared for her mother until she died in 1999.Joan was kind to all she met and had a special touch when caring for a sick person; she always put everyone else's needs above her own. She was a perfect nurturing mother. Joan had a genuine sweetness and naivetT, yet, she had amazing stamina to get through the tough times. She loved to laugh, especially at herself, and was a sheer joy to be around. More than one person called her an angel. Now she is one.
