According to his daughter, Nellie, John W. Farrell was born in Ireland in 1872 to Andrew and Nancy Farrell. He married Ada Gillespie in Indianapolis in 1899. He spent many hours working in his bicycle shop on Tenth Street. They had a son, John Russell in 1903, but he died at six months and is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery. In 1906, he had a daughter and named her Nellie after his sister, Nellie who left home and never returned. He was a humble man who loved children and animals. One day Nellie bobbed her hair on a whim. Her mother was extremely upset and wouldn't talk to her for weeks. John told Ada to quit being silly over such a thing; he liked his daughter's hair. He liked to go fishing, tinker around repairing things and read in his spare time. Ada, Nellie and her daughter, Joan loved John Farrell dearly and were heartbroken when he passed away in 1934. They said that he was a very kind and wonderful man. |
