The Robertsons decided to name their Christmas baby 'Noel'. Noel decided to arrive in January. At two, he would stand behind the locked screen door and jabber at people as they walked by the house. Few could understand him, but he was a friendly fellow. At three, he took his tricycle apart and his father sternly told him, 'Put it back together'. To his father's amazement, he did! According to his mother, he could recognize any car, point at it and say its name; i.e., 'Boo-ick'. At four, he sat on the back steps and dropped little pebbles in his little sister's ear. Luckily, his mother was able to swiftly pluck them out. On rainy days, he ran through the rain and stomped in mud puddles. It was hard for his mother to keep up with him; he was a little fireball. Noel walked a city block to grade School 54. He was active in the Cub Scouts. He liked competitive games such as chess, board games and cards. He especially loved to build model cars and build with blocks. Noel also enjoyed kickball, high jump, ice-skating, bicycle, stilt walking, and swimming. He loved to climb the old pear tree. He had many customer compliments on his timeliness and attention to detail as a paperboy for the Indianapolis Times. The family took their first vacation in 1959, visiting Disneyland, the Hollywood Bowl, the Rose Parade and the Alamo. This began his love of travel. When Noel was 13, the family moved to the suburbs and he attended Eastwood Junior High School and, then North Central High School. He enjoyed drafting, drawing cartoons, lifting weights, wrestling and dating. After graduating, he joined the Navy, advancing to radar man. He traveled the world, including Beirut, Florence, Malta, Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines. During one tour aboard the U.S.S. Mazama, he squashed his index finger between two five-hundred-pound bombs, required surgery to insert a pin. After the Navy, he moved back to Indianapolis. Eventually, he met and married the love of his life, Sandi Kaiser. They had two children whom he adored, Sarahbeth and Seth. The family lived in Columbus, Ohio, where Noel worked for National Retail Hardware Association, designing floor plans for hardware stores. Throughout his life, Noel loved celebrating the holidays. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and cooking! Grandma Nellie said he still loved rainy days.We were all devastated by Noel's death. We miss his smile and enthusiasm. He could light up a room. As his step-grandfather said at his funeral, 'Noel lived life with a zest! Perhaps Noel enjoyed life at a fast pace because it was meant to be that his life would be shorter.' Noel, you died too young at 34, my beloved brother, but you're in good company. I'll be seeing you.
