Mary Luella Howard was born in Macoufrin County, Illinois, in 1857. Her parents had three children, Mary, Mathilda and Larkin. Mary married a man with the last name Gillespie and they had a daughter, Ada in 1877. It is said that her husband died soon after. Mary then married William Nichols and they had a daughter, Pearl, in 1880. Ada lived with her Grandmother Howard and Great Grandfather Howard on their farm for a few years. Later, Ada lived with Mary, William, Pearl and the Thompson children, Amy, Will and Leonard. (Mary's sister, Mathilda Howard Thompson, had married John Lane Thompson they went to Missouri or Iowa and died enroute back to Indiana. Mary's brother Larkin had four children, Edith, Edna, Axil and Alma.) They considered themselves a complete family. Mary loved children. She died in 1927. Ada's daughter, Nellie often said that Mary was a fine woman and she really loved her. |
