Martin Cesnik was raised in Haughville on the west side of Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church and School and graduated from Cathedral High School. He was working at National Wholesale Grocery and dating Betty Welch when he was drafted into the army in January of 1942. In August 1943, Betty took the train to Brownsville, Texas to Martin. Together they had nine children.During World War II, he was awarded the bronze star for the recovery and repair of disabled army vehicles. After World War II, he worked at Link-Belt for thirty-four years. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He often wore his favorite swimming trunks; blue with red ants, despite (or because) Betty hated them. He would come home from work, sit in a kitchen chair and say 'I haven't had a hug or kiss from anybody all day'! That would start a stampede to be first on his lap. Sunday was his day to cook. Lunch usually was fried chicken, mashed potatoes, cream corn and cherry pie. He was also a handyman and could often be found tinkering in the basement.Martin loved the outdoors, State Parks; the Catheads on White River, the Martinsville Fish Hatchery, and Eagle Creek Park were some of his favorite haunts. He loved to point out birds, trees, fossils, constellations and other natural wonders we would never have noticed. He loved going to 'the land' in Brazil, Indiana for long walks and to see the stars at night. He enjoyed caving and on his 64th birthday, he climbed through Shaft Cave, which has an 80-foot entrance shaft! Martin Cesnik was a very loving and giving man. He enriched the lives of everyone that knew him. He is truly missed. |
