Betty Jean Welch was born November 19, 1923, one of five daughters to Noble Welch and Ruby Cox Welch. She grew up on the west side of Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated from Washington High School. She met Martin at a skating party at Holy Trinity's gym. He was sitting with a friend who pointed to Betty and said, 'That's who you're going to marry'. Martin seemed to think so too. He asked her to skate with him, but she refused. According to Betty, he asked every time he saw her. He was persistent and eventually he wore her down. They had their first date and the rest is history!Betty stayed home to raise their family. She was the overseer of a well-oiled machine. She would have the kids help with housework on Wednesday, pack clothes on Thursday and dig out camping gear after school on Friday. When Martin came home from work everyone loaded the car and went away for the weekend. They may have not been rich but they had many adventures on their vacations. A week off from work meant a major expedition. Come rain or shine Betty came through with her trusty overnight case. If it rained, she'd pull out games or cards to keep the kids entertained and patches for the tent. If sunny, fishhook sand bobbers, medical supplies for countless scrapes, bruises, and matches for a campfire and trinkets for the kids if they were really good. It is amazing how such a little case could supply so many memories! As Betty and Martin's children raised their own families, they find they are using many of the same values and skills she taught all her children. She may be gone but her spirit lives on in all of them. |
